Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that kills cancer cells by using special drugs, called photosensitizing agents, along with light. The nontoxic light-sensitive compounds are exposed selectively to light, whereupon they become toxic to targeted malignant and other diseased cells (phototoxicity). The healthy cells are not affected.
